To employ a foreign-educated nurse in the United States, it is necessary to meet federal immigration requirements. This typically involves obtaining an appropriate visa, such as a Registered Nurse Immigrant Visa (“Green Card”) or an H-1B visa. Additionally, nurses must complete a screening program approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to obtain an occupational visa.

Foreign-educated nurses seeking employment in the USA must meet certain educational and professional qualifications. These include graduating from an accredited nursing education program in their home country, holding a nursing license in another country, and having a minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse. Depending on the nurse’s country of origin, there may be English language proficiency requirements, which can be demonstrated through exams such as TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS Academic. However, exemptions may apply based on the country of origin.

Foreign-educated nurses are required to have their academic and professional credentials evaluated by an authorized organization recognized by State Boards of Nursing. This evaluation ensures the authenticity of the documents and determines the comparability of the nurse’s education to U.S. nursing standards. Yes, foreign-educated nurses must obtain a professional license from the state where they intend to practice nursing in the United States. Each state’s Board of Nursing has its own specific requirements for licensure. In most cases, nurses will need to pass a licensure exam, such as the NCLEX-RN, to become registered nurses. Some state boards may also require applicants to take a qualifying exam, which can indicate readiness for the licensure exam.

The qualifying exam, which certain state boards may require, fulfills the screening requirement mandated by the U.S. federal government for occupational visas. In addition to assessing a nurse’s preparedness, it is a predictor of performance on the licensure exam.

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a globally recognized English proficiency test accepted by the US Government and US Visa and Immigration Department. International registered nurses who wish to work in the USA must take the IELTS exam to demonstrate their English language skills and ability to function effectively in an English-speaking environment.

The IELTS exam is scored on a scale of 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert). Generally, you will need an overall score of 6.5 on the IELTS exam to meet the requirements for a US visa. However, specifically for the speaking section, a score of 7 is typically required to meet the US visa standards.

Many states require applicants to undergo a criminal background check to ensure patient safety. Some states may have additional requirements, such as specific coursework, fingerprinting, submission of transcripts, or verification of previous licenses.

We cover all the costs that will be incurred, including the cost of your visa and airfare and the first few months of your accommodation upon arriving in the U.S.

Note: Housing will be covered during the orientation process.

Spouses and dependent children under 21 can be included under your green card. It will be up to you to pay all expenses associated with their visas and travel.
